Early BCS Projections, Part 2

Posted on: May 6, 2008 10:48 am

With Dennis Dodd's updated Spring Top 25, let's take a look at part 2 of the early, early BCS projections:

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia. The top two teams in the nation would meet in Miami for all the marbles. Obviously this is an early projection, but for now let's assume Dodd's top 2 teams remain there all season.

The Rose Bowl would get first choice of all the replacement teams, but they love to keep that Big Ten vs. Pac-10 tradition, so expect them to take another Big Ten team if they can -- maybe Illinois or Wisconsin. Now if USC is the Pac-10 representative, I'm not so sure they take Illinois in a rematch game. Wisconsin vs. USC would be there best choice, but it IS possible for them to take a Big 12 team, not likely, but if Missouri is way up there, maybe Top 4, it could have a Missouri vs. USC game.

Now the Sugar Bowl also would lose an anchor team (SEC Champ), so it would get second choice of all the remaining teams. And you better believe if Florida is ranked in the Top 7, the Gators and Tim Tebow are heading to New Orleans.

So now we need to put the rest of the conference champs in place. ACC Champ -- projected Clemson -- heads to the Orange Bowl; Big 12 Champ -- projected Oklahoma -- heads to the Fiesta Bowl.

So this is what we have:

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia
Rose: USC vs. Big 10 No. 2 (Wisconsin/Illinois) or Missouri
Orange: Clemson vs.
Sugar: Florida vs.
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs.

Now the rest of the selection for 2009 is as follows -- Fiesta, Sugar and Orange. With the Fiesta getting first choice, they probably would pass on West Virginia to avoid a rematch, but could take Arizona State, if the Sun Devils finish high enough in the final standings. Now if Missouri ends up in the Rose Bowl, then Wisconsin in the Fiesta would be the most logical choice.

Next up is the Sugar Bowl, and they would snag West Virginia (Big East champs) or Missouri. West Virginia travels well, Pat White's final game or the prospects of taking the Big 12 runner up with a potential Heisman Trophy winner in Chase Daniel.

The Orange gets the final pick and still could end up with Missouri if everybody elses passes or West Virginia depending on who the Sugar Bowl takes in front of them.

Now here is the big kicker -- BYU. They could be the BCS party crasher this year. They will start out in the preseason Top 20, could easily run through their conference games. Their non conference games are Northern Iowa, Utah State, Washington and UCLA. Now, they beat UCLA last year and the game is in Provo, but still could lose and they travel to Washington on Sept. 6. If BYU qualifies, they most likely will be headed to Miami, unless the Fiesta Bowl shocks everybody and takes them with the first selection after the replacement picks.

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia
Rose: USC vs. Illinois/Wisconsin/Missouri
Orange: Clemson vs. West Virginia/Missouri/BYU
Sugar: Florida vs. West Virginia/Missouri
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Arizona State/Wisconsin/BYU

Early BCS Projections, Part 2

I can go with Georgia in the BCS Title Game, but I don't think the BCS will allow Ohio State to embarass themselves, again.  BYU?  Can we Hawaii?  But, I do think BYU has a better chance of getting selected than Ohio State.

There is no "allowing" a team to embarrass itself or not allowing. Ohio State is going to be preseason No. 1 or No. 2 -- they have a team that is loaded and will be better than last year. If they are undefeated or have only one loss early on, they just might find themselves No. 1 or No. 2 again.

And you think BYU has a better chance to make the BCS than Ohio State? You must not have followed the BCS system very long. Anybody else agree with this guy?

Early BCS Projections, Part 2

Too be honest it's no use projecting anything anymore after last year. EVERYBODY had USC as a lock last year. Same trend the past few years. Start out in Top 5. Lose a game or 2 they shouldn't lose, finish strong winning there last 4,5 games, then blow someone out in the Rose Bowl. If i had to pick somebody i would pick Georgia to win it all next year. I hope WVU makes it if they run the table but not likely. Could happen but not likely. Most likely Fiesta or Orange.

I think that Ohio State has a very good chance to get into the game. I also believe that the winner of the B12 and the winner of the SEC have a strong chance. I don't think Georgia will when the SEC and I have a strong feeling that Texas will be a force in the B12 this year.

I'm saying Ohio State and pretty much the rest of the Big Ten, short of Michigan, have been perennial chumps in bowl games.  It will be hard for them to allow another "I told you so..." blowout.  So, just like LSU miraculously jumped the ranks the last week of the season to avoid a OSU-Michigan rematch.  They (the infamous pronoun people controlling the BS, I mean BCS) will keep Ohio State out of the BCS Title Game.  I think they ought to make it to a BCS Game, but I don't think the Big Ten is a strong enough conference anymore to say the winner should automatically considered to be #1, with such out of conference opponents as Youngstown State Penguins (IAA), Akron, Kent, and the big one against Washington (4-9 last year).

You are clueless. Ohio St. is 4-2 in BCS bowl games. In what universe, other than inbred SEC-land, does that qualify as perennial chumps?

Nightmusk,

Since you beat the Canes to win the NC game you haven't really had a solid win. Ya you won games against Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, and i think Texas but that was the Alamo Bowl. You have been their just not in the past few NC games. If you play Georgia in the NC i think it will be more of the same. But your looking good to make another run at it. Just can't let Terrelle Pryor get in your way. Do us a favor and drive Rich Rodriguez into a pulp! I've been a Buckeyes fan ever since December!

It depends, I'm not sure writers will purposely keep Ohio State out of the title game. If they go undefeated and beat USC, they are in, no matter what happens. Now if they beat USC and lose to a crappy Big Ten that's a different story, but they are going to be preseason No. 1 or No. 2, so if the writers really wanted to keep them out, they would start them out at like No. 12.

We admit it, I had USC vs. LSU in the title game. But it sure is fun to project isn't it. Stay tuned, I will actually project EVERY bowl game at the beginni
